A medical abortion (also known as a medication abortion) is a procedure that involves the use of medication (prescription drugs) to terminate a pregnancy. It is conducted through the ninth week of pregnancy and does not involve surgery.

The bill, "Medical Termination and Pregnancy Act," was passed by the parliament keeping in mind the progress medical science had made in the field of making abortions safe and its side effects non-life-threatening.

Medical abortion is only permitted (by law) if the following conditions exist:

  • A possible health risk to the mother's physical and mental health

  • A potential risk to the health of the growing foetus

  • If a woman gets pregnant as a result of rape

  • Failure of contraception

While abortion laws vary from country to country, it is legal in India until the 20th week of pregnancy in certain circumstances. However, in a few rare circumstances, the court may authorise a termination after 20 weeks.
