Everything you should know about IVF treatments!

Not many couples have the good fortune to be able to conceive naturally. Same-sex relationships, genetic conditions, male or female factors, or other unexplained causes could bring it on. But does that imply that they have no chance? With the advancement of medical science, we now have a wide variety of vaccines for various diseases, previously unimaginable treatments, and assisted reproductive technologies (ART). IVF, which stands for in-vitro fertilisation, is one of them.

What is IVF?

In vitro fertilisation is referred to as IVF. It's one of the more well-known methods of assisted reproductive technology (ART). IVF combines medication and surgical techniques to help sperm fertilise an egg and the fertilised egg implants in your uterus.

First, you take medicine to prepare several of your eggs for fertilisation. The eggs are then removed from your body and combined with sperm in a lab to aid in the fertilisation of the eggs by the sperm. They place one or more fertilised eggs (embryos) within your uterus. Pregnancy occurs if any of the embryos implant in the uterine lining.

IVF treatment steps

  1. Ovulation: Generally, women produce one egg per month. During this treatment, women are given some medicines to boost egg production.

  2. Egg retrieval: A minor surgery removes the egg from her body. Donated eggs are used if the woman cannot produce any eggs.

  3. Insemination and Fertilisation: Insemination is mixing the sperm and the egg. The man’s sperm is extracted and combined with the best-quality egg. Then the sperm enters the egg. This is the time when the sperm and egg fertilise. But if the sperm cannot enter the egg, it is directly injected into the egg.

  4. Embryo Culture: The fertilised egg divides into two new eggs to form an embryo. The embryo will be checked frequently by laboratory staff to ensure normal growth. A typical embryo has numerous cells actively dividing after about five days.

  5. Embryo Transfer: Embryos are implanted in the woman's uterus three to five days after the egg is removed and fertilised. The doctor inserts a narrow tube (catheter) containing the embryos into the woman's vagina, via her cervix, and up into her womb. Pregnancy happens when an embryo sticks to (implants in) the womb's lining and develops.
